Shelter staff has attended “Dogs Playing for Life” and are conducting playgroups with the tools and knowledge they gained at the class. Playgroups help socialize the dogs, making them more adoptable.

Animal Control and shelter staff has been attending Continuing Education classes, such as Cruelty Investigation and Compassion Fatigue.

The Currituck County Sheriff’s Department has assisted Animal Control with a few cruelty investigations.

The volunteers have been coming back in since the shelter has opened back up after COVID and staff is grateful for the support.

The free rabies clinic on October 1, 2022, provided rabies vaccines to ~435 pets. Thanks to Dr. Tracy and his staff from Moyock Animal Hospital for a job well done.

Shelter staff traveled to Delaware in December for the Mega Adoption Event and were able to place 9 dogs and 18 cats in homes. They have also been having great success with PetSmart and rescue partners getting animals adopted or into rescue.

Gina provided a copy of and directed the Board to the County website County Code Of Ordinances to see the Board responsibilities. Donna Corbo stated that when the Board was formed, that previous County Manager, Dan Scanlon, spoke to the Board and explained the responsibilities to them. Rebecca Gay, Assistant County Manager, encouraged the Board to look at the County Code of Ordinance on the website and to email or call for further assistance.

Nancy VanClief asked if a Memorial Plaque could be hung at the Dog Park in Barco in honor of Marion Gilbert. Kevin McCord said that he would present that to the Commissioners and did nor foresee a problem. He also stated that 30-50 dogs are at the dog park daily. Kevin also stated that there is a dog park at Sound Park at the South end of the county.

Brenda Parrish inquired about what needs to be done to start a Trap Neuter Release (TNR) program. She stated that Dare County has started a TNR program and would like someone to investigate writing a grant. Gina, Donna, and Kevin discussed the legalities to the ‘Caretaker/Keeper” such as vetting, care, and ownership. Kevin relayed how difficult it is receiving a grant because Currituck is a Tier 3 county. He also stated that follow up and reporting is difficult. Donna asked Brenda to check with Dare County where they got the grant money from. Gina also spoke about the new ordinances and discussed compliance/conflict with how they are written.

Donna asked Kevin about the “anti-tethering” law. Kevin stated that he and Gina had discussed the ‘anti-tethering”, however it went cold. They discussed trying to implement temperature for tethering, as it would be easy to prove. The Board discussed requirements for dogs, such as “adequate shelter”. That can be seen in the ordinances on the County website.

Donna also stated that the dog park gate is broken. Gina stated that Parks and Rec is aware. Rachael is going to call Parks and Rec to check the status.

Rachael thanked everyone for supporting the shelter and invited everyone to visit.

Nancy wanted to know the meeting dates for the year. Gina stated the meetings will be January 5, April 6, July 6, and October 5. The meetings will be at 6:30 at the Public Safety Building.

  • MOVER: Rachael Stone
    SECONDER: Nancy VanClief

Rachael moved to approve the dates. Nancy seconded. The vote was approved unanimously.
