  • MOVER: Ralph Melton
    SECONDER: Tim Bostaph
AYES (5)Ralph Melton, Tim Bostaph, George Thiess, Bradley D. Atons, and Steven VanHise
    RESULT: Approved (5 to 0)

Crissy Daneker (Currituck Fire/EMS Administrative Assistant) forwarded all reports received.  Some still missing.  Antons stated that the monthly reports need to be submitted to Crissy via email before the meeting, and a great reminder is when she sends out request email for Agenda items on the upcoming FEAB meeting.

Chairman Antons spoke about the definition of this time in the meeting.  Antons stated that the public is misusing the time and said that the comments stated here should be announcements ie. Volunteer Fund Raising Dates, etc.  NOT new issues or requests for follow up meeting agenda items.  A request needs to be submitted to Crissy Daneker to add an action item to the Agenda.  This will help the Board obtain the necessary information so that the conversation doesn’t carry from one meeting into another just because of fact finding purposes.

Mary Beth Newns took the time to thank everyone who came to the Regional Response Team meeting held prior to this Board meeting.  Mrs. Newns stated that she would need to be contacted if deployment is involved, but to otherwise feel free to contact them as needed.

Chief Shortway from Corolla Fire shared their Insurance Services Office inspection was completed and believes it went well.  Lee Kennedy performed the inspection, which is a new inspector.

Deputy Chief Richard Lane from Currituck Fire/EMS as well as Ken Ferrell from Crawford Volunteer Fire are selling raffle tickets for a side by side all terrain vehicle.  All proceeds will go to the Fireman’s Association scholarship fund.

Chief Jay Laughmiller from Carova Beach is selling tickets to a 50/50 raffle to benefit Currituck Fire/EMS employee John Brock who is currently battling cancer.  Brock reached out and suggested everyone give blood in his honor vs. raising money, which will take place December 10 at the Pine Island Fire Station.

Chief Melton from Currituck Fire/EMS stated that he has sent out the contracts for using the Mobile Communication Terminals purchased by the County and is awaiting signatures.

Commissioner Beaumont shared that a budget meeting was held with the Board of Commissioners recently with the outcome of identifying that the cost of business has increased and so will the taxes in Currituck. The increase will also fund the schools requests.  Beaumont also shared that three pieces of apparatus was funded in the new budget.  Chairman Antons collected total numbers on apparatus of each Department to begin some research on the apparatus needs across the County.

Chief Laughmiller of Carova Beach started a discussion on the occupancy of homes in their district.  Laughmiller states that the homes are being rated for a certain number of bedrooms, but then being converted to a larger number.  The County Manager as well as Planning Officer stated that the County’s hands are tied with those situations since the changes are being done once the septic has been approved.

Next FEAB meeting will be held on May 22, 2023 at 7pm Pine Island Fire Department.
